From Idea to Data Workshop Session
Learn how to turn clinical questions into usable EHR data. This first session of a three-session interactive workshop series will teach you how to define diagnoses, labs and medications, build clear data requests and design feasible studies using EHR data and PCORnet. Participants will complete hands-on exercises and leave with practical tools they can use in their own research.

From IDEA To DATA A Hands-On Workshop Using EHR & PCORnet
Struggling to turn a clinical question into usable data? You’re not alone!
Many research projects are delayed or produce misleading results because key concepts like diagnoses, labs and medications are not clearly defined in a way that EHR data can support.
Using real-world examples and the PCORnet Common Data Model, participants will learn how to:
✓ Translate clinical questions into computable definitions
✓ Identify where key data elements live (diagnoses, labs, medications, encounters)
✓ Build clear, structured data requests
✓ Reduce back-and-forth communication with data access team and get to “good” data faster
✓ Understand the strengths and limitations of EHR data for research
Each 60-minute session will include guided, hands-on exercises and participants will leave with practical tools they can immediately apply, including a concept-to-data map, a structured data request and a one-page study design.
No prior data experience required.
