The keynote speaker, Rachel Patzer, PhD, MPH, President and CEO of Regenstrief Institute at Indiana University School of Medicine spoke about using secondary data to change national policy with providing examples from U.S. transplant system.

Obtaining grant funding using secondary data section was a popular portion, with presenters discussing topics such as using medical records data to conduct NIH-funded patients outcome research among their work and using state cancer registries in secondary data analyses.

The Ohio State University Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s designated data navigator is Dr. Ayse Odabas who is research scientist at the Center for Biostatistics at The Ohio State University. Dr. Odabas discussed the steps on how to obtain access to secondary data sources such as MarketScan, CMS Standard Analytic Files and EPIC COSMOS.

Overall attendance increased by 72.2% compared to last year, reaching a total of 198 attendees. Among these attendees, 78 attendees were from external academic institutions other than Ohio State or Nationwide Children’s Hospital (almost four times higher compared to last year) which included three attendees from international institutions.

When asked what goals the attendees plan to use secondary data for in their future work, they indicated using various data sources to submit NIH grants, using secondary data for their dissertation and using specific data sources such as All of Us.
